The 6' 2", 205 pound athlete out of Cordova (AL) had many options to choose from, but in the end, he choose Ole Miss.
"Yes,
he committed to Ole Miss today," added Cordova head coach, Pete Bush. "Tim
(Simon) and I called Coach Markuson to let him know about the news and he
was really excited. He also got a chance to speak to Coach Nutt, and he said Tim
made his day. It was a pretty exciting moment."
The decision caught
some by surprise as the Rebels were not listed as a contender until now.
"That
is because Ole Miss came on him late. I guess they did not think they had a chance
with him, but then when he did not commit by the end of the summer, they got on
him hard. I told Tim that when he takes his visits, he would know when he found
the right place. He went over there this weekend for the Auburn game, and he came
back and told me that he had found his home. I told him to give it a night to
sleep on, and if he felt the same way the next day, to come to my office. He came
to me this morning and said he was ready, so we gave them a call.."
What
made Tim feel like Ole Miss was the best choice for him?
"He said
he really liked the atmosphere and coaches. Tim liked the small town feel, and
he said their campus was amazing. He just liked everything about it over there."
Who
else was involved in Simon's recruitment?
"His top schools were Alabama,
Clemson, Tennessee, and MSU before he decided on Ole Miss."
Did all
of those schools offer him a scholarship?
"Yes they did, along with
some more."
Does Coach Bush feel like Tim will take some more visits
before signing, or does he feel like his star do-it-all athlete is solid with
his recruitment?
"I think he is real solid with it. He could have
made the decision after last season to go to Auburn, and he did not commit. He
could have made the decision to go to Alabama after this past summer, and he didn't
do it. Tim is where he wants to be."
Simon helped Cordova to the Class
3A State Championship as a junior. He rushed for over 1,500 yards and 33 touchdowns.
Simon was honored with The Birmingham News 2007 Super All-Metro Team AISA
1A-6A Running Back, ASWA Super 12 and All-State 3A RB First Team.
"He
is the best player I have ever seen on the field. I guess that is the easiest
way for me to put it. He is a solid 6' 2", 205 pound complete player. He
returns kicks for us, plays tailback, linebacker and plays some safety for us.
Tim is just a complete all-around player."
What is his best position?
"The
good thing about it, he is a very good running back. If we had the luxury, we
would just play him at tailback. He has rushed for over 5, 000 yards since he
has been here, and if he were just playing tailback for us, that number would
probably be around 9, 000 yards."
What does Simon do best at RB?
"He
is a power runner with great speed. His speed is what really gets people, and
he can make you miss."
What about on the defensive side of the ball?
"He
will bring the hat to you. He covers well too."
Simon was selected
to play in the MS/AL All-Star classic and marks the Rebel's 12th public commitment
for the Class of '09.
