OM Hoop's Signee Named Mr. Basketball

It was quite a run for the 6' 9', 205 pound senior out of Manassas High School. First, he broke the Tennessee state record for blocks in a career. Two months later he helped his high school to its first ever State Championship, and the icing on the cake came when he was named Mr. Basketball in Class 1A.

"That meant a lot to me because I was the first player from our high school to ever win Mr. Basketball, and I helped our team win its first state championship," added a proud Reggie Buckner. "Nobody can ever take that away from me. It is neat to be a part of history."

Reggie stepped his game up this season in the scoring department. He averaged 19 points, 14 rebounds, 7 block shots, and 6 assists per game.

"I helped our team out a lot. I scored when we were down and couldn't score. The biggest moment of the year for me was when I hit a 3-point basket as time expired against Craigmont to send it to overtime. We ended up winning by two points, and Craigmont was the #1 team in 3A."

Reggie prides himself on great defense.

"I improved a lot on my defense. I could defend guards better. I am quicker now. I also started knocking down some jump shots this year. I practiced everyday in the gym on my own. I worked hard to become a more consistent shooter."

Buckner broke the Tennessee state record in blocks this season.

"I broke the state record in blocks that was held by Michael Wilson who played for the Harlem Globetrotters. The record was 594 blocks. I passed it. I do not know what my final total came to, but I passed it in the middle of my (senior) season."

The 4-Star forward stepped up his game when it came playoff time.

"My best game of the season was against Humbolt, the first game of the state tournament. I took over the last quarter on defense and offense. I scored 20 something points in the 4th quarter and had 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots in that quarter to help us win a pivotal game. I averaged over 25 points a game in the playoffs. I feel like I played the best basketball of my life during the playoffs."

What will the offseason consist of for the Scout.com National 100 member?

"I am just trying to stay in shape until I come down to Ole Miss and start my summer conditioning program. I am reporting to Ole Miss in June so I am not playing any AAU ball."

What are his first year goals?

"I want to help my team make it to the NCAA tournament and break the freshman block record. I feel like I am going to bring a lot to the table. I am going to bring a lot of leadership and hustle on offense and defense. When I watched them this past year, it looked like they needed someone who could rebound in traffic. That is what I plan to do, rebound and block shots."

Ole Miss has one message for Reggie.

"They check up on me all of the time (laugh). They just want me to stay in shape, and they do not want me to play with anybody. They want me to work out on my own so I do not get hurt. They said they are snake bitten right now with the injury bug so they can not afford to lose me. I have no problem with that. They are paying for my education so I am going to do what every they want me to do."

How are Buckner's grades?

"I am already qualified. I got everything I need. I move down there in June. I am just excited and ready to go."
