Early Signing Period Arrives
Expected Fall Basketball Signees Reggie Buckner6' 8" small forward out of Manassas HS (Memphis/TN)*The Scout.com National 100 prospect is best known for his athleticism on the court as he set his sights on defense last season and averaged 6.7 blocks a game to lead the City of Memphis. This past summer at the prestigious Boo Williams classic, he led his team to the tournament title over LeBron James' team and scored 19 points ( 8 - 11 from the field), 11 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Buckner was named MVP.*Buckner choose Ole Miss over Kentucky, Missouri, and UTEP. Each schools offered.Hoop NotesThe Rebels only had one scholarship opening due to them saving a spot from last year's class. They do not have any seniors that are on scholarship for this year's squad.They were going to try and make room for 4-Star 3G, Trenton Marshall, but we hear that they might have moved in another direction now. If Trenton decides to not sign in the early signing period, there is a chance that the Rebels could get back on Trenton.We will keep you posted today if anything changes with Trenton's status.Expected Fall Baseball Signees Eric Callender6’3” 195 Sophomore RHP from Meridian CC (Hometown: Baton Rouge, LA). *Eric is a talented RHP with a FB in the 88-90 range. He also throws a good CB and CH. He is a mature pitcher who knows how to really pitch and use all three of his pitches. He is expected to be Meridian CC #1 pitcher this season. Eric is originally from Baton Rouge, LA and attended Southeastern Louisiana before moving on to Meridian. *Eric was being recruited by and chose Ole Miss over LSU, South Alabama, Troy, and Mississippi State.Jordan Cooper 6' 2", 185 LHP out of Farragut HS (Knoxville, TN) *Jordan was on campus a this summer and received an offer. He is a very talented LHP that throws his FB 87-90 with a good CB and excellent CH. Farragut is the best HS in Tennessee for baseball and they won the state championship this past year. Jordan was 15-1 for his HS team. **Jordan committed to Ole Miss over Kentucky and was offered by several more SEC programs including LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Vandy, Georgia, and South Carolina. Considered by insiders as perhaps the top pitching prospect to committ to Ole Miss in the last four classes!Chris Ellis 6'1" 185 infield/outfielder out of Stratford HS (Macon, GA). Throws from the right and hits from the left.*Chris has started varsity since his freshman season and was a 2008 2008 Georgia AAA All-State Team Selection and a 2008 Baseball Factory All-American Selection. He is a strong bodied player who is very versatile. He can play either corner IF or corner OF position. Chris is a good athlete with a solid arm. His best attribute is his bat. He is a very good left-handed hitter who has power to the gaps. Evan Frazar6' 1", 200 pound infield prospect out of St. Pius X (Houston, TX). Throws and Bats from the right side.*Rated the #92 prospect by Perfect Games. Evan is a terrific athlete that can play anywhere on the field. He plays SS in HS and has good action and a plus arm (91 MPH) across the diamond. Evan is also a plus runner that has been clocked at 6.60 in the 60 yard dash. He is an accomplished hitter and has a chance to hit for a lot of power. *Evan picked Ole Miss over Texas A&M, LSU, Arizona, and Miami.Miles Hamblin 6' 3", 200 pound catcher that throws from the right side and bats from the left. Plays for Howard College in TX (Hometown: Rowlett, TX) *Miles is a very good catch and throw sophomore catcher at Howard College in TX. Last season as a freshman he hit .412 with 11 HR, 17 2B, and 56 RBI's. He was recently selected to play in the Texas JUCO All-Star Game. Miles is the younger brother of Danny Hamblin who was a star at Arkansas a few years ago. Miles will give Ole Miss another quality catcher and a good left-handed bat with power. He should make an immediate impact here at Ole Miss.* Miles chose Ole Miss over Nebraska and TCU.Chad Hunter 5' 11" 195 Sophomore outfielder from Walters State CC (Morristown,TN). Throws and Hits from the right side *Chad is a tremendous OF prospect with many solid tools. He has the ability to hit for power and average. His best tool might be his speed. Chad is a very good defensive Of with good range in the OF. He has the ability to play all three OF positions but has primarily played CF at Walters State and been their lead-off hitter.Last year as a freshman at Walters State he hit .356 with 14 HR's and stole 35 bases. Walters State is one of the country's best Junior College programs. Last season they won over 50 games and played in the JUCO World Series. *Other schools that were actively recruiting Chad were North Carolina, Tennessee, Austin Peay State University, and Florida International. Zach Lowery 6' 3", 200 pound outfielder out of Kennesaw Mountain HS (Atlanta, GA). Throws Right and hits Right. *Zach is rated #121 prospect in 2009 class by Perfect Game. Zach is a very talented athlete for his size. He has a nice speed/power combo to his game. He best tool is his bat, and he hits for a lot of power. In the OF, he is a corner OF (left or right field) that runs a little and throws very well. He was on campus in June and received an offer from Ole Miss. *Zach was offered by Tennessee, Kennesaw State, Georgia, and Ole Miss. Tanner Mathis6' 1", 185 OF/LHP out of Barbe H.S. (Lake Charles, LA). Throws and Bats from the left side.*Tanner is an athletic player that has had a remarkable career as a two-way player. He plays for Barbe HS in LA which is widely considered one of the best HS programs in the country. Tanner has good speed (6.8) in the sixty and gets down the line from home to 1B very well. He is a great hitter with good hands, bat control, gap to gap power, and a very advanced approach. In the OF he gets good jumps and reads on the ball and has a good OF arm. Tanner is your prototype leadoff guy who can steal bases and has an advanced feel for the bunt game. *Tanner chose us over LSU, Texas A&M, Southern Miss, UL-Lafayette, and SE Louisiana among others. David Renfroe 6' 3", 190 pound RHP/INF out of South Panola HS (Batesville, MS). Throws and bats from the right side.* Rated #101 prospect in 2009 class by Perfect Game, and #78 by Baseball America, which is the highest ranking for any Mississippian. He is a super high level pitching prospect that has been a star on the summer circuit. He throws 88-90 with a power slider. He also is an accomplished hitter and will be a two-way player at Ole Miss. The Rebs will fight the draft on David, but they hope his strong ties to Ole Miss will be enough to get him to campus. His father Laddie was a former Ole Miss Rebel and played in the Big Leagues with the Cubs. *Choose Ole Miss over FSU and MSU among others.Trent Rothlin 6' 2" 185 Soph RHP from Walters State CC in Morristown, TN (Hometown: Hickory, NC) *Trent is a hard throwing RHP that was drafted out of HS by the Seattle Mariners in the 35th round. He throws his FB in the 90-93 MPH range with tremendous sink. He also throws a good CB 73-74 and a CH. He is without doubt a power arm and will make an immediate impact at Ole Miss. He has the stuff to be a weekend type arm or work out of the bullpen in a closer type capacity. *Rothlin Chose Ole Miss over Florida, NC State, East Carolina, and UNC-Greensboro. Jon Andy Scott 6' 4" 220 LHP Soph at Northeast Mississippi CC (Hometown: Booneville, MS) *Jon Andy is a very good LHP in the JUCO ranks here in MS. He is coming off an elbow surgery that he had late in his HS senior year/summer. Jon Andy throws his FB 85-88 and has shown better velocity up to 89-90. His best pitch is a very hard SL that he throws 77-79 MPH. Jon also has a change up as his 3rd pitch. Jon Andy spent last year re-habbing his elbow but is getting back into game shape. *Scott chose Ole Miss over Memphis, Troy, and UAB. Alex Yarbrough6' 1", 175 pound shortstop out of Allen HS (Dallas, TX) 6'1"/175 lbs. Throws from the right side and is a switch hitter.* Rated #154 Prospect in 2009 class by Perfect Game. Alex is a smooth fielding SS with a very good bat. He made only 3 errors at SS this season. He played his summer baseball with the Dallas Mustangs. The Mustangs are a very high level summer program that travels all over the country in the summer. This summer Alex hit .455 with a bunch of doubles. He is a good runner, 6.85 sixty time. Alex has a strong arm and again is good in the field. Yarbrough is a young senior, just turning 16 this summer. He has tremendous upside and will grow into an even better prospect over the course of the next year. |** Alex committed to Ole Miss over Baylor, TCU, and MarshallBaseball NotesThis isn't going to be a big class for Ole Miss. There will probably be a total of 12 players that sign in the Fall signing period. The new NCAA rule states you can only have a 35 man roster which is going to keep their recruiting class numbers down each year from here on out, as it will for all D1 programs. The baseball signees will not be released all in the same day. They usually spread the announcement of each LOI.
