QB Drew Allen update

Mississippi Scout
Posted Jul 21, 2008

The 6' 5 1/2" Texas signal caller had a chance to take in one of the Elite football combines in Orlando this weekend at the "Top Gun" event.

"The camp went great," added Drew Allen. "There was a lot of great talent there, and we were taught by some of the best in the nation. I had coach Rich Bartel from the Dallas Cowboys instructing me. Perry Williams who played in the league a long time was also helping out and there were guys like Andre Rison and some more of the NFL greats who were helping us. Me, Tajh Boyd, and Kevin Newsome all hung out and picked each other's brain."

What were some of the things Allen took away from the camp?

"I learned a lot about coverages. Richard Bartel told us what to expect and how to recognize what the defenses were going to throw at us. I felt like I was pretty advanced with coverages coming in, but now I feel more confident than ever. I can't wait to get out there and test it out."

Drew has narrowed things down to Ole Miss, Purdue, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, and Vandy. He visited each school this summer and took in his last visit to Ole Miss last weekend. Has Allen been in contact with the staffs outside of Ole Miss about his last visit?

"Yes, I have spoken to them all (laugh). Right now, since Ole Miss is my last stop, the visit process is now over with. I am just trying to think it out. It gets a little confusing in some parts. I am just asking them questions about some things I need to get straight in my mind."

Like what?

"Basically just going over the offense. Those kind of things."

Has Drew been in contact with the Ole Miss staff since he visited last weekend?

"I have spoken with Coach Austin a few times, actually. His mother is going through surgery so I have been checking up on him to make sure everything is going well with her. He just keeps tells me that I am his number one guy."

Has a time frame been set for a decision?

"I would like to get it over with before the season starts. That is really the only time frame I have thought about."

Allen passed for over 2, 500 yards and 28 TD's as a junior.
