"Lamar was our MVP. He uses his speed to
play all over the field. He had five interceptions and two fumble recoveries for
us. He's just got a nose for the ball," Coach Jackson added about the Compton,
CA, native. "His speed is the difference. He's got 4.6 football speed," added
head coach Angelo Jackson.
"I think I bring a lot of excitement to
the table. I am a good athlete who covers well, and I am a sure tackler, added
Lamar Brumfield. "I am a playmaker who has good speed."
Speed
is definitely one of Lamar's attributes as he ran a 11.99 100 meter dash as a
senior in high school. It was at traditional powerhouse, Carson High, where Lamar
made his name for himself.
"My senior year I had 91 tackles. I was
named 1st Team All-League, All-State, and All-City."
After a stellar
senior season, Lamar signed a scholarship with Washington State.
"It
was a hard decision. It was down to WSU and Oregon, and I just went with my heart.
I was redshirted there my freshman year but I did not like it, so I came over
to Compton and got a brand new start."
As a redshirt freshman this
season, Brumfield made an immediate impact for Compton CC.
"I had
105 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 int for a 70 yard TD, 2 fumble recoveries (1 returned
for a 90 yard TD), and 4 forced fumbles."
Lamar was named 1st Team
All-Western Conference in his first year at Compton CC. Now he will have 3 to
play 3 for the University of Mississippi.
Brumfield will sign in February
and enroll at Ole Miss in May.
"I am taking my official visit there
on January 19th. I just can not wait to see what it is like down there. I met
Coach O when I went to USC for Junior Day when I was in high school," Lamar said.
"He's the kind of guy I want to play for."
Larry Dennis is also excited about his
opportunity to be a Rebel.
"It will be real convenient for my family,
with me being from Lakeland (FL). It is closer to home where my parents can come
to some of the games. I like the conference they play in, and I love Coach Orgeron.
He gets me all pumped up every time I talk to him," added Larry Dennis.
"Larry
has a great personality and he's also a player who relies on his speed. We put
him at defensive end mostly, but we also put him at OLB some - anything on the
edge to contain the outside and to rush the passer. He has a knack for getting
to the quarterback either with his hand down or in a stance from LB," Jackson
added.
"I think I am more of a pass rusher. I like to get after the
QB. But I am good against the run too, but I like to rush the passer. When I am
at LB, I can use my 4.7 speed to be a sideline to sideline player," added
Larry Dennis.
Where does Larry project to play at Ole Miss?
"They
are telling me I could get some snaps at both end and (defensive) tackle. They
really do not know yet."
As a freshman, Larry had 56 tackles and 9
1/2 sacks for Compton CC. He was named Honorable Mention All-American for his
play. This season saw Dennis collect 82 tackles and 11 sacks. He was named 1st
Team All-Conference and was again named as a Honorable Mention All-American.
Who
were the main schools in contact with Dennis?
"Well, coach does
not like for us to talk to the schools, unless it goes through him, but I was
hearing from Nebraska a lot, Purdue, and Ole Miss. There were some others, but
those were the schools who were coming after me the hardest."
Lamar
is expected to graduate in December and will take his official visit to Ole Miss
on December 8th.
