Drexler Johnson remains focused after injury
Posted Sep 22, 2006
Drexler Johnson (QB/Ath, Wayne County, MS) - Mississippi's all-time touchdown passing record could be broken this season.
"I have 79 passing TD's (25 short of state record). I think I have 12 this season (which is correct). I should be able to get it done as soon as I get back out there," added
Johnson tore his ACL last week but was cleared by the doctors to resume play.
"I went and got a second opinion on Thursday, and they said I could wear a brace until the season is over and then I will have surgery to repair it."
Tonight #2 ranked Wayne County (4-0) faces Green County but it will be without Johnson's services.
"I will not get my brace in until next week, so I have to miss tonight's game, but I will be back against West Jones. They are a big rival of ours, so it was important that I got back for that game."
Has Johnson seen any improvement in his game this year?
"I think so. Our OL has really come around, and that has helped our passing game out a lot. My mechanics are much better this year. I worked real hard on my release this summer, and I watched a lot of film. I was looking at our main receiver too much in the past. I am not doing that now."
Although Drexler has been one of the more efficient signal callers in Mississippi's history, some schools are still eyeing Drexler for another position.
"I want to play QB, but some of them like me at DB or WR."
Will the position he is recruited to play be a factor in his decision?
Which colleges are staying in contact?
"USM, MSU, Auburn, Houston, Florida, Oregon, and that is about it. Coach has gotten a couple of letters, but he has not given them to me yet."
Which colleges now stand at the top of Johnson's list?
"I like USM, Auburn, and Florida, pretty much."
What stands out about
"It is real close to home. It will not be far for the fans to travel. I went to a camp this summer, and I think they were real impressed with me. I had a field day that day."
"They have two of my teammates there right now."
"I do not think I will be able to go there because of my size. I am too small to play QB there."
Has Ole Miss been in contact lately?
"I have not gotten a letter from them in a while."
Drexler carries a 2.6 GPA / 15 ACT.
