NCAA rules LaDerrick Vaughn eligible

LaDerrick "D" Vaughn (LB, Memphis, TN) - After a long knock down drag out with the NCAA clearinghouse, LaDerrick was finally ruled eligible yesterday.
"I am just glad to get all of this behind me," added an excited
LaDerrick Vaughn
. "I get to go back to Ole Miss in January."
The Clearinghouse initially ruled Vaughn ineligible over a dispute on whether an Algebra class Vaughn took should count as a full credit or a half credit. They gave him a half credit until it was appealed and later reversed their decision.
Some could be upset that their careers are being put on hold for a year because of an error, but not LaDerrick.
"I do not feel bitter at all. I do not hold a grudge against them (NCAA). Everything happens for a reason, and I just look at this as another opportunity to further my athletic and academic careers. I will still have four years to play. I just can't wait to get back after seeing how they played on Sunday."
What will Vaughn be doing in his spare time between now and January?
"I am just working out with a trainer and taking six hours at S' West CC."
LaDerrick went through voluntary workouts with Ole Miss' team this summer. This gave him an invaluable learning experience.
"I know what to expect now. I now have the experience so I will know what to expect when I get back up there. I was kind of surprised that I did as well as I did. I have a lot of confidence now because I know I can compete on that level. I really think I can come in there in January and get a (starting) job. I get a Spring under my belt before (fall) practice starts. I should have the system down pretty good by then. I know I can compete athletically, I just need to learn the system."
Where does Vaughn expect to line up next year?
"Either wide receiver or safety, but probably safety. That is where they played me this summer."
LaDerrick rushed for 1, 486 yards and 15 TD's as junior and was named to the Super Prep All-Dixie team.
Vaughn marks Ole Miss' 28th signee to be ruled eligible for the '05/'06 signing class. Only one signee was ruled ineligible (Aubrey McPhadden) and two more (Terry Levy & Jerrell Powe) are still waiting for the final word on their academic status.
LaDerrick marks Ole Miss' 19th public commitment for the '06/'07 class.
