Chavez
is the leader of the secondary for Booker T. Washington. The Tornadoes were ranked
sixth nationally by Street & Smith in their opening poll after losing a heartbreaker
to Armwood in the playoffs last season.
BTW was on their way to ending Armwood's
state-best 27-game winning streak in the playoffs until a bust occurred in the
Tornadoes secondary with less than a minute left in the game.
"Yea,
we all think about that play over and over. I mean, we had them beat and to let
them score on an 80 yard screen play with 40 something seconds left. Man, that
hurt. It just taught all of us to play for 48 minutes and not 47, "commented
Chavez Grant
Sometimes hard knock lessons are the best lessons to learn,
and it looks like Booker T. Washington is ready to vent their frustrations on
anybody who gets in front of them, as they are off to a 5 - 0 record.
One
constant the Tornadoes have had since their upswing started three seasons ago
is outstanding secondary play. Chavez Grant has been a shut down corner for BTW
since he took over the starter's role during his 10th grade season. This year,
he collected three interceptions in the first three games, but it looks like the
opposing teams have learned their lessons and have quit throwing his way.
"Nothing
has come my way," stated the frustrated Chavez Grant. "I just want some
action, you know, but we are winning so that is all that matters."
Which
colleges have offered Grant a scholarship?
"Ole Miss, Georgia, South Carolina, Miami, Duke, and Indiana have offered me."
Does Chavez have
any official visits on tap?
"I am leaving tomorrow for Ole Miss with
my teammate, (DE) Joseph Jackson."
How did Grant become interested
in the University of Mississippi?
"I have been watching them on TV
for years, and their coaches have been calling me a bunch. They are pretty straight.
I am just going to go over there this weekend and see what they have."
What
will he be looking for while he is on his visit?
"Just how the players
and coaches get along. I want to see their campus and see how their game day atmosphere
is like. That is basically it."
Every staff has their selling points;
what are Ole Miss'?
"Really, just their tradition. They are a known
program that plays on TV a lot."
Who else is in the running to receive
an official visit?
"Georgia and South Carolina are the ones I am thinking
about."
What does he like about Georgia?
"The same things.
I talk to their coaches a lot. My dad talks to them too. He likes their staff
a lot. I like them too."
And South Carolina?
"Two of my
uncles played football for South Carolina. And besides, Coach Spurrier is there
now. You have to look at that."
