Trey Hampton ready to make an impact
Posted Feb 22, 2005
(SF, Hoover, AL) - One of Ole Miss' key recruits gave his verbal to the Rebels last August and the 2005 Fall class never looked back, as this group was ranked as high as #3 in the country by one recruiting publication.
Hampton, who was Alabama's sole junior on the '04/'05 1st Team Class 6A squad, averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists this year.
The following information was revealed during our interview with
How did Hoover fare on the court this year? "Our team got knocked out about a week ago."
What was your final record? "I do not even know, it was not even .500. We had a sorry year."
What went wrong? "We tried to switch our whole offensive system. We slowed it down and tried to score in the 30's. We only averaged like 36 points a game this year. It was terrible the whole year."
How would you rate your play? "I feel I played well. The numbers were a little down from last year, but I feel I got better and better."
What most did you improve on? "I added an actual go to jump shot. I have something to hang my hat on now. And my ability to get the ball to the right spots. I feel like I made my teammates a whole lot better."
What did you average for the year? "Something like 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists."
What were your shooting percentages? "I averaged 78% from the free throw line, 40% from 3 point, and 54% from the floor."
Any awards come out? "No, they have not even really gotten into the playoffs yet. It will be another month of so before they start to give out the state awards."
What most will you have to work on for the next level? "Right now, of course, I am always trying to improve on my outside shot and jump shot. My ball handling, I want to be able to be anywhere on the court and handle it like a guard. I am also working hard in the weight room."
What do you measure out at these days? "Like 6' 7", 220."
What are your maxing out at right now? "I can bench press 275 and squat 340."
What are your expectations for next season? "To come in with a clean slate and work as hard as I can to help the team. I know they have been struggling, which is really not indicative of how good Coach Barnes can coach. I just want to help him turn it around."
How are your grades coming along? "A lot better since the season ended. I retook the ACT test the last time it was given. I am waiting on the results right now."
What do you need to become a full qualifier? "I already made a 19 on it my sophomore year. I just retook it to try and make as high of a score as I can."
How about your GPA? "I have a 2.5 core GPA and like a 2.8 overall GPA."
When do you plan to enroll at
? "I am leaving here the day after graduation which is on May 28th. I am going to both summer sessions at Ole Miss."
Have you had a chance to keep up with the other Ole Miss signees this year? "I actually have not. I have never spoken to the other recruits. I am just waiting to get down there to see what they are like."
Did you keep up with Ole Miss' recruiting rankings during your recruitment? "I definitely kept track of where we were ranked. It really did not mean that much to me though because it is all about what you do on the next level, not what you do in high school. But yea, I kept up."
What can the Ole Miss fans expect from Trey Hampton next season? "I will bring athleticism and just an all around good basketball player with a winning attitude."
