Posted Nov 9, 2004
(Forward, Laurinburg Prep, NC) - Ole Miss had been keeping tabs with Mike for two years now. Smith enrolled at Laurinburg Institute this summer to work on his game and academics. It looks like that transition has gone smoothly for Mike, as he is doing well both in the classroom and on the court.
Smith is averaging 14 pts and 8 rebounds for a squad that is ranked #1 in the country and will send 14 players to the D1 level tomorrow.
The following information was revealed during our interview with
What is your current height, weight, and forty time? "I am 6' 7", 240."
Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "The 3, 4, and 5."
Which position do you currently play? "The 4 (power forward) and the 5 (center)."
What are your strengths on the field? "My physical ability. My post moves. I am real good in the post."
What are your working on for the next level? "My ability to handle the ball and my outside shot."
Who did you play for in high school? "Jacksonville (AR)."
What were your stats as a senior? "I averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists a game."
Any awards? "I made All-State (
), All-Conference, and I was nominated as a McDonalds All-America. I also made All-Metro and was selected to the Arkansas All-Star classic, but I did not play."
And how did you get to Laurinburg? "I came up here because I was short on my ACT. I thought they could also help my game."
How has your experience at Laurinburg been? "I like it up here. It is a small town. All you do is study and play ball. We have a talented team. We are the #1 team in the nation. I love this coaching staff and basketball team. It is alot of fun playing with this much talent. I mean, they send over 10 players every year to quality programs. They know what they are doing here. I have learned so much about the game of basketball from Coach Chaney. I am just thankful for the opportunity to play for him."
Reports have come out that you have committed to
; is this true? "Yes sir."
Why did you choose Ole Miss? "I felt the most comfortable with their coaches and players. I feel like I fit in. I know a couple of their players, and I feel like we work good together. I played on the Arkansas Hawks with a couple of their guys, so I know how we mesh together."
Who else were you interested in? "I was not really looking at anyone else. I was looking at Ole Miss early. The rest of the schools were contacting my AAU coach. He handled all of that stuff."
Do you plan to sign with Ole Miss on Wednesday? "Yes sir."
What do you need to become a qualifier? "I need to improve on my ACT test score."
The following information was revealed during our interview with Laurinbug's head coach, Chris Chaney:
Talk about Mike Smith's game. "He is a very versatile player. He words extremely hard with his game. He has already lost 25 pounds since he arrived. He is doing everything he can to become a great player. He is a great pickup for Ole Miss. He has a good low post game. If he did not sign early, every program in the country would be after Mike. He could have wrote his own ticket."
What are Mike's current stats? "He is averaging 14 pts and 8 rebounds a game. We are 7 - 0 and will send 14 guys to high high D1 programs. His stats speaks volumes about his game. He is one of the players we lean on."
What does Smith need to work on for the college level? "Nothing in particular. If he keeps doing what he is doing, he should contribute right away at Mississippi, which is a big statement in the SEC."
In your opinion, is Mike a high D1 prospect? "There is no doubt he is a high D1 player. I do not think a lot of people knew about him because of where he played. He got here late too. When everyone gets a chance to see him this year, they will ask where did this kid come from. I have coached and coaches against many Top 100 players, and I would not trade Mike for most of those guys."
Which schools were in contact with you about Mike? "His AAU coach mainly handled his recruiting.
, Arkansas, Charlotte, and Mississippi were the schools that I personally talked with who wanted to bring him in for an (official) visit."
