Summer Happenings With Rebel Baseball Program

The Rebels hosted their Senior Camp last week, and it started off with a bang.

One of their top pitching prospects, Wade Broyles, committed to the Rebels at the camp.

Baseball Commitment by Jeff Roberson

Wade Broyles
(RHP, Madison Central, MS) - The Ole Miss baseball program received its second baseball commitment for the 2004/2005 class when one of their top pitching prospects inside the state of Mississippi committed at the Senior Camp.

Broyles puts it plain and simple when you ask him why he is going to play baseball for Ole Miss.

"I've been an Ole Miss fan all my life," said the 6-3, 195, RHP from Madison Central High. "I just wanted to go to Ole Miss."

And that's that.

Broyles, who attended baseball camp at UM this week, said he's glad to have the decision - or what little decision it actually turned out to be - behind him as he heads into his senior season.

"It feels great that I don't have to be stressed out about a decision this year," said Broyles, the second player to commit to UM this summer, joining Cody Satterwhite of Hillcrest Christian as Rebels of the future. "I knew I wanted to come here anyway, and it was best for all to get it over with."

Broyles' specialty is his curve ball. It's been called by some as the best in the state.

"But I'm still working on it," said Broyles, whose former Jaguar teammate Travis Bogue is already on the Rebel roster. "I'm also still working on my fastball and on my changeup. I want everything to get better."

Broyles has put up some impressive numbers over the years. His record in high school the past two seasons is 11-3. As a sophomore he was 6-0.

In one game this past year, a playoff game against Northwest Rankin, Broyles pitched 8 and 2/3 innings, had 16 strikeouts, and allowed only one hit. Problem was, his team lost 2-1.

This summer he has played for the famous Jackson 96ers team. He also plans to play fall baseball with a team in Jackson.

Broyles says he hopes to have a good next few months before arriving at Ole Miss for the 2005-06 school year.

"I want to have a low ERA this year," he said. "I need to work on having less walks. I want to continue to improve my pitches. I need to work on better control, especially with my fastball and changeup. My curve ball is pretty much there already."

Broyles, who also played outfield and first base and is a good hitter, batting .315 this past season, was being recruited by several schools, including instate schools like Mississippi State and Southern Miss. Now that it's all behind him, Broyles is ready to look toward the future.

"I'm happy it's over and I know I'm coming to Ole Miss," he said. "It's what I've always wanted."
