And it showed.
The Rebels won the exhibition contest, 75-70, but needed overtime to pull it off. The absence of Henderson, who sat due to suspension, was obvious. Ole Miss attempted 11 3s in the game, making only two.
Henderson led the SEC in scoring last season. He will also miss the team’s season-opening game against Troy Nov. 8, as well as the first two SEC games against Auburn and at Mississippi State.
“At times,” Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy said, “we’re still looking around as to ‘OK, who are the leaders of the team?’ It really comes down to Snoop (Ladarius White), Jarvis (Summers) and Derrick (Millinghaus) without Marshall there. They’re the guys that were in the hard games last year and had success.”
Millinghaus led Ole Miss in scoring with 15 points. White and Summers tied for second with 13 points apiece. Demarco Cox, who missed most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot, had 11 points and eight rebounds.
“He got better as the game went along,” Kennedy said of the 6-foot-8, 276-pound junior.
Ole Miss shot 41 percent from the field for the game. The Rebels were 21 of 32 from the free throw line, good for 66 percent. USC-Aiken, led by DeVontae Wright, who finished with a team-leading 14 points, shot 40 percent.
Martavious Newby started the game at guard. He grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in leading the Rebels to a 48-42 rebounding advantage.
“I’m anxious to see the tape. I thought we did some good things,” Kennedy said. “Coming into the exhibition game, I was trying to get some guys some minutes. All of those new guys, it was good to get them into a little bit of a flow so they could get the jitters out.
“I thought we guarded pretty good. Our problem was offensively, and some of that was my fault. We didn’t want to show a lot.”
Aaron Jones made his return from an ACL injury with six points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Of the newcomers, Sebastian Saiz saw the most action, finishing with seven points and six rebounds in 24 minutes.
“There were a lot of good teaching points,” Kennedy said. “We’ll use this tape in preparation for next Friday. We’ve got a lot of time to evaluate and make some adjustments.”
