Bulldogs Pick Up #1 for 2014

Nikia Cathey blazed some trails for the Longhorns of Westwood High in Memphis this past season. Cathey's breakout campaign caught the attention of the Bulldogs of Mississippi State who offered recently. After taking some time to consider a future in Starkville, Cathey has decided to commit to the Bulldogs.

"I committed this morning," said an excited Cathey. "I just know Mississippi State is the school for me and I know that Coach (Tim) Brewster wants me to come there."

Brewster, the Bulldogs' receiving coach, has tabbed Cathey as the slot receiver of the future for the Maroon and White.

"Coach Brewster said that I was the perfect fit for their offense," said Cathey. "I like how they use their receivers and I like the offense.

"Coach Brewster said I was exactly what he was looking for in the slot."

Cathey reports that the Mississippi State family made an impression on him when the talented return man visited the campus during the 2012 season.

"I went to watch Mississippi State to watch them when they played Tennessee," said Cathey. "That game is what really got me thinking about going to Mississippi State.

"The fans were great and the atmosphere was real hype.

"I just felt like that could be the place for me and then they ended up offering me."

The early offer may have come as a surprise to Cathey, but Westwood High head football coach Anthony Jones was not caught off guard.

"You know it's an honor to get an early offer from an SEC school," said Jones. "I am not surprised at all, because I know how hard this kid has worked for it.

"We are all just so proud and just so happy about everything that has happened."

Jones went on to say that the Bulldogs are getting a fine football player.

"Nikia does all of the little things well with and without the ball," said Jones. "He takes a lot of pride in his blocking and that is rare on the high school level.

"He has just been an explosive player for us and we couldn't be prouder of him or for him."

Cathey is the first public commitment towards the 2014 signing class for Coach Dan Mullen and his staff.
