The latest names to keep an eye on as LSU searches for a new basketball coach.

Johnny Jones
Current position:
North Texas head coach
Age:
49
Hometown:
Deridder
Alma mater:
LSU
Overall record:
205-162 (12 years)
Career stops:
Memphis (1 year), North Texas (11 years)
La. connection:
Grew up in the state, played four seasons for LSU and was an assistant to Brown for 14 years.
Notable:
Jones is one of a handful of players who has played in a Final Four and also been a coach in one.
Positives:
Nobody the LSU administration could interview has a stronger connection to the Tigers' history and tradition. Jones has spent 11 seasons crafting his coaching ability at a school and in a conference where winning is a challenge and has put together a pair of NCAA Tournament teams.
Negatives:
Fairly or not, Jones will always be connected to the unsavory end of Brown's historic LSU tenure. His name has been cleared to a degree and he has put together a nice career at UNT, but there will always be a faction of LSU fans leery of reconnecting to that part of the Tigers' past.

Tubby Smith
Current position:
Minnesota head coach
Age:
60
Hometown:
Scotland, Md.
Alma mater:
High Point (N.C.)
Overall record:
491-209 (21 years)
Career stops:
Tulsa (4 years), Georgia (2 years), Kentucky (10 years), Minnesota (5 years)
La. connection:
None other than having coached against LSU several times in his 13 years as an SEC coach
Notable:
Smith is the lone coach LSU could take a serious run at who has a national championship, winning the 1998 crown in his first season as the UK coach after taking over for friend Rick Pitino.
Positives:
There are very few bigger names LSU could bring in and provide instant credibility and potential stability. Smith’s teams are known for being fundamentally sound. He has guided 16 teams to the NCAA Tournament, nine to the Sweet 16 or deeper.
Negatives:
Recruiting tailed off in his last few years at Kentucky when the Wildcats lost 13 and 12 games – all five of his teams at Minnesota have lost at least 11 games – and couldn’t get past the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In the competitive Big Ten, Smith’s league record is 38-49 and none have finished above .500. His age doesn’t seem to match well with a long-term solution.

Scott Sutton
Current position:
Oral Roberts head coach
Age:
41
Hometown:
Omaha, Neb.
Alma mater:
Oklahoma State
Overall record:
250-162 (13 years)
Career stops:
Oral Roberts (13 years)
La. connection:
None
Notable:
Sutton is the winningest coach in ORU history and the only one who has taken the Golden Eagles to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (2006, 2007, 2008).
Positives:
As the son of Eddie Sutton, not many coaches come from a more successful tree, although the longtime Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State coach isn’t the only influence on Scott Sutton. He was also on the Oral Roberts staff when Bill Self launched his coaching career and has emulated the Kansas coach in many ways. Scott Sutton is still young and has shown stability in his long tenure in Tulsa, passing up several offers to leave, including Nebraska this offseason.
Negatives:
No experience beyond the mid-major level as an assistant or a head coach. His last hands-on experience at the power conference level was as a reserve guard for his dad at Oklahoma State. And could he be the next in line at Oklahoma State should Travis Ford not survive the long term?

Chris Collins
Current position:
Duke associate head coach
Age:
38
Hometown:
Northbrook, Ill.
Alma mater:
Duke
Overall record:
Collins doesn’t have his own record yet, but Duke is 356-72 with a pair of national championship since he joined the staff.
Career stops:
Seton Hall and Duke as an assistant coach
La. connection:
Like Capel, he has no connection other than his relationship with Alleva.
Notable:
During his tenure, Collins has recruited and worked with several of Duke’s guards, including Slidell native Chris Duhon and former National Player of the Year J.J. Redick.
Positives:
Young energy, big name and top-shelf pedigree. Would ostensibly be eager to show up and carve a successful niche right away. National recruiting connections that he should be able to tap into immediately.
Negatives:
Can’t imagine this would be the final job for Collins. He might not be the immediate heir apparent to Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, but if for some reason Johnny Dawkins doesn’t jump at the chance, Collins would be on deck. He is also thought to be a prime candidate for the Northwestern job should Bill Carmody be let go in the near future, and it would make sense that Collins would be a popular candidate for any Big Ten or ACC job that opens up because of his connections and history.
